Do I need to Acclimatise Wooden

Flooring?

You may have heard the horror stories about wood flooring which has risen up in people's homes or about large gaps opening up after solid wood flooring installation. Moisture is one of the main reasons behind most wooden floor failures. And it is very important to be aware that all of these problems can be easily avoided and one of the most important ways to avoid a disaster is to check your site conditions are suitable before acclimatising your solid wood flooring.

The Air humidity should be 45-65%. You can test this using a hygrometer.
Timber sub-floors should be tested for moisture and have a MC% (Moisture content) of no more than 12%
Concrete sub-floors should be tested for moisture and have a MC% (Moisture content) of no more than 12% on a prong test or below 3% on a concrete moisture meter
Check the sub-floor is level using a long straight edge and ruler. It should vary no more than 3mm in height over 1m. Uneven floors should be repaired using a self-leveling compound or plywood.

This leads to strongly recommending letting the flooring acclimatise to the humidity and temperature in your house, especially during winter and autumn. So you don't have to do much, other than bringing the packs inside, spreading them out and letting them stay there for up to a week, depending on the type of flooring.

Floating

Click: This is a glueless method, typical for engineered floor fitting and laminates. Each plank connects to the neighbouring ones through a locking profile, which secures the planks in place without the need of adhesives. As the planks are not bonded directly to the sub-floor, laying an underlay for additional sound insulation or damp-proofing can be of extra great benefit.

Tongue & Groove: Each plank connects to the others through grooves and tongues, much like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. So this method allows the installation of flooring planks with a thickness of 18 mm and over.

Glue-Down

Using professional adhesives can sometimes be the only way of laying wooden flooring. FlooringFirst uses high-quality flexible glues for application on concrete, or in areas where pipes can be present below. So this method is appropriate for parquet floor fitting, or mosaics and patterned panels.

Nail-Down

The name says it all. What it does not mention is that there is no trace of any nails visible, as they are placed below the surface of the plank at a 45 degrees angle, pushing the plank down, and backwards to the previous row. Using nails to fasten the planks is advisable for hardwood with a thickness of 18 mm and over.
